CIRCULAR SOCKS

THE ELLEN MACARTHUR FOUNDATION, THE CIRCULAR FIBRES INITIATIVE + MA MATERIAL FUTURES

This was a project set by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation for the MA Material Futures course at CSM, based on the publication, ‘A New Textiles Economy: Redesigning Fashion’s Future’. The brief asked us to imagine and bring to life the vision of a fully circular economy in 2040, through illustrating the lifecycle of a circular garment. This meant considering not only the consumption of a product, but also the production, manufacturing as well as the disposal of the garment.

The video presents one of six projects, each created by MA Material Futures students, that was then entered into a competition to have their video presented at the Copenhagen Fashion Summit, 2018. The video shows the life of a pair of socks within the Circular Economy, whereby textiles is woven in such a way to allow yarns to be successfully sorted on the garment’s disposal. At the end of the socks’ life, each yarn is separated before being up-cycled into a new pair.
