PINEAPPLE WOOL

STELLA MCCARTNEY CLIENT BRIEF + ma material futures

The project was a client brief set by Stella McCartney for the MA Material Futures course at CSM. The brief asked us to individually propose and design a fashion artefact or material that communicates not only the brand's ethos and ethical position, but also prioritises an alternative means of material fabrication or engineering. In questioning the use of animal products, the response to the brief presented a vegan alternative to wool using the waste leaves from pineapples. Other animal product substitutes are already advancing, such as leather and silk, yet an alternative to wool is still far from being explored. Designing within the circular economy, the project proposed a sustainable and biodegradable material that uses an already existing bi-product of pineapple consumption, the pineapple leaves themselves. By taking the pineapple leaf fibres through the traditional wool process of spinning, the value of the materials that we wear is relocated through a celebration of these traditional crafts.
